He is the heartbeat of young boys and girls in India today. Without his melodies, one feels incomplete while expressing his/her love to their partners. His melodious voice has created a magic in the Bollywood and we all love to listen to his songs. He is the voice of almost all romantic films being produced in India. We are talking about Mohit Chauhan, the most loved & respected singer in Indian music industry.
Mohit Chauhan hails from one of the beautiful hill states, Himachal Pradesh. He was born on 11th March, 1966, Nahan. He attended St. Xavier’s School in Delhi and again moved to Himachal Pradesh to complete his further education. Dharamshala witnessed the making of a star while he spent his youth exploring music in the Kangra valley where he completed his master’s degree in Geology from Dharamshala College.
Mohit Chauhan never received any formal training in music but plays guitar, harmonica and the flute. During his college days he used visit the nearby place called Mcleodganj, where he learned to play guitar with his friends from Tibetan community.
After completing his education in Himachal, Mohit Chauhan went to Delhi where he formed the band Silk Route with his schoolmate Kem Trevedi (pianist) in 1996. Silk Route released their first album called Boondein. One of the song from this album became a sensation in Indian pop music industry and everyone in India were singing ‘Dooba Dooba Rehata Hoon, Aankhon Mein Teri, Deewana Ban Gaya hoon main ab chahat mein teri”. The album climbed to number one slot and went on to win many awards at Channel [V] Awards in 1998. Another album released by Silk Route was ‘Pehchaan‘. Although after sometime the band dissolved and the friends were separated.
Later on Mohit Chauhan made his first solo album called ‘Kalaam‘ for which he composed the music and also wrote the lyrics. He was also a part of the television reality series Mission Ustaad on the entertainment channel. He stayed off the scene for a while until he came back in playback singing with the song “Guncha” in 2005 from the “Main Meri Patni Aur Woh“. Impressed by his vocals, he was then approached by A. R. Rahman to sing for the movie “Rang De Basanti“. The song “Khoon Chala” earned him rave reviews. However, it wouldn’t be until 2007 when music director Pritam approached him for the song of “Jab We Met” that Chauhan would finally achieve mainstream success.
He later sang for A.R. Rahman in ‘Rang De Basanti‘ and ‘Delhi-6‘. His big moment came when he sang ‘Tum Se Hi’ from the super hit movie ‘Jab We Met‘. Since then he went on to sing for most of the established music directors in Hindi film industry. Then came the film Rockstar which turned the singer Mohit Chauhan from just singer to a real Rockstar.
One of his song ‘Pee Loon’ from the Hindi movie ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai’ became a national anthem for the youth. He has also sung for Bengali movies like Sedin Dekha Hoyechilo & Paglu.
In addition to film playback singing, Chauhan has sung many advertisement jingles for products including Alpenlibe, Parachute, Wheel (detergent), Nescafe, Hippo Munchies, Vicks Vapor Rub, Alchemist & Maruti Suzuki Alto (2011). He has also sung the theme song for Star Parivaar Awards 2011.
Mohit Chauhan once said, “if not a musician, i would have been a farmer because I simply love nature. As I was born and brought up in Himachal Pradesh, I used to listen to a lot of Hindi songs over radio apart from ghazals, western music and ‘Himachali’ folk songs. I love folk music they are just close to my heart and soul.” He continues, “I did a lot of theatre, was part of NSD and did full length plays on stage. In fact, at one point of time I wanted to get into FTII but there were no acting courses then so I missed the opportunity.”
Mohit Chauhan is married to Delhi-based Journalist Prarthana Gehlot on 29th June 2012 in solan Himachal Pradesh. Mohit’s wife works with an English magazine and hails from Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
Mohit is a soft-spoken yet charming artist whose music completely sweeps you off your feet and transports you into a new plane of experience. He has been recently awarded for best playback singer for “Matargashti” at the Zee Cine Awards.
He took part in singing reality show, Mission Ustaad on 9X, where he teamed with Vasundhara Das. He also took part in the singing reality show on STAR Plus, Music Ka Maha Muqqabla, where he lead the team Mohit’s Fighter.
In 2011 he featured in the third episode of The Dewarists collaborating with Indian Ocean for the song called Maaya.
Recently Chauhan has collaborated with singer Neeti Mohan to sing a song for the new season of the TV show “Yeh Hai Aashiqui”. The duo have recreated the title track of the show and shot a music video together.
“I had seen few episodes of the series once. Then I got a call from Disney and I heard the song. I got to know that Neeti would be singing with me and I was very excited.” Mohit says. Apart from this, both the singers will be featuring in some of the episodes in the series as musical narrators.
He says, “I have never been part of something like this before on TV. This was my first time and I was happy. I also shot the video with Neeti. We both will be featured in some episodes, through our song. I am excited about it.” Mohit says he is also keen to release a few singles in the future. “Hopefully yes, I have a few things planned. Let’s see if things work out.”
